The fashion industry took over New York City this week with the annual CFDA awards. The 2014 CFDA Fashion Awards was held at the Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center on June 2. For those who don’t know, CFDA stands for the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Every year, they award the top honor, the Fashion Icon Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America to an individual whose style has become iconic and important to the fashion industry. This year, the winner was Barbados chanteuse, Rihanna.
The “Good Girl Gone Bad” singer wowed the NY fashion photographers of the red carpet with a stunning sheer sparkling fishnet gown. The risky Adam Selman garment left little to the imagination with the pop star appearing virtually nude for the NY fashion award show. The garment went perfectly with her speech where she explained that in fashion, “There are rules, but rules are meant to be broken”. She also went on to say that in her home country, she “…didn’t have a lot of access to fashion” growing up and began to use fashion as her “defense mechanism” in the music industry. She thought, “she can beat me, but she can’t beat my outfit”. Fashion designer, Zac Posen, said that what makes Rihanna special to the fashion industry is that “…she takes risks and she marches to her own drum and she knows what she likes”. Posen also credits Rihanna’s appreciation of fashion designers for the reason “people love to dress her”.
Rihanna wasn’t the only big winner at the John Waters hosted CFDA fashion awards. The international award went to Raf Simons of Dior, and the CFDA lifetime achievement award went to designer Tom Ford. Another pivotal moment of the ceremony was the bestowing of the prestigious Founders Award to Bethann Hardison, a former model and modeling agent who has been a vocal champion for diversity on runways. Supermodel, Naomi Campbell, tearfully presented her with the award. It was a fantastic ceremony and our New York fashion photography team at Le Image Inc congratulates them all!
